In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, without initially provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
