Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
