Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
