Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
